Laketran is trying to eliminate a barrier often mentioned as to why people don’t vote – access to transportation.
On Tuesday, November 6, 2018, Laketran will be offering free rides to polling locations across Lake County to ensure all registered voters can vote on Election Day.
“Lack of transportation or the ability to afford transportation should not stand in the way for any resident that chooses to exercise their right to vote, especially here in Lake County,” shared Laketran CEO Ben Capelle who manages the county’s regional public transportation system.
“If someone is unable to get to their polling location because they do not drive or cannot afford the bus fare, we want them to be comfortable to call Laketran so we can get them there.”
Polls in Lake County are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on November 6.
“The Board of Elections applauds Laketran’s decision to offer free rides to the polling locations on Election Day. Many Lake County residents rely on their services to help get them to and from doctors’ appointments or their employer. We view the voting process as something just as vital to the everyday lives of our residents, so we are pleased with this decision,” remarked Lake County Board of Elections Director, Ross McDonald.
Residents who prefer to take Laketran’s Local Routes 1-6 simply need to inform their driver when they board that they are going to vote or just voted and the trip will be free.
Dial-a-Ride, Laketran’s door-to-door paratransit service for seniors and people with disabilities, will also provide rides to polling locations at no charge and requires a reservation be made 2 to 10 business days in advance. To schedule a Dial-a-Ride reservation, call Laketran Customer Service at 440-354-6100.
“All citizens have the right to take part in our nation’s democratic process,” added Brian Falkowski, Laketran board president. “And we want to do our part to make sure that opportunity is available here in Lake County.”
